I had this idea to make a kokeshi doll for a friend as a gift. I am not a carpenter. Any starting tips?

Not really have experience working with wood, but I can learn very fast. Are cylindrical pieces of wood you can buy. Make any offer around. recommendations on the dissemination of this fact. The goal is to make a Japanese kokeshi doll that looks like a friend of mine. The hardest part will probably be painting. But I can figure that out. Wood is the thing that have no direct supplies or tools.
