Porcelain Snuff
Chinese Snuff Bottles â € "Sensations in Glass!
Author: John N. Cohen
The first decided to buy bottles that were not carved in stone are glass. A wide range of glass bottles are found in all shapes and colors and a variety of manufacturing techniques.
Much more research is needed in order to date these bottles, but it is now generally agreed that glass and metal bottles were the first materials to be used. The problem is that the glass has been used throughout the period until the snuff bottle today.
The Chinese had little use glass before the 17th century, mainly due to its highly refined porcelain skills. They had no glass windows in for translucent paper. We are not sure if the glass had been used centuries earlier in China, but certainly they are introduced to Europeans in due time by snuff bottles.
Cameo glass
This was seen as a very valuable material in the production of works of fine art. Sometimes it is simply as a stone and bottles of a solid piece of what blew the glass into molds. The creation of many unusual bottles that range from transparent to white color overlay funds for the work. They were also able to control the bubbles and the addition of white flecks in the glass, the colors, as suggested by these names apt have been created: - Soddo Snow, Camphor, and snowflakes.
These bottles are then dipped into molten glass of bright color that would later be carved out to leave a cameo-style design. Some are crossing more than once to provide more than one layer of color. Another technique is to apply a different color the molten glass bottle stains. When these were carved out of the bottle can have up to eight different colors of cameo carving without increasing the number of layers.
Quality Counts
To a connoisseur, the number of layers of color is not as important as it is not difficult and a much softer than the material for carving stone. What really should be assessed is the quality of height and overall design. Very often a beautifully carved and well-designed single color overlay goes much more than a bad multicolor finish, but the bottle.
To evaluate these bottles of color is a great test, but attention as well as cameo carved stone the quality of the carving and especially how well the fund is close to finishing the edge of the overlay. I selected a single red ruby as a superposition good example in the picture. Shows a spiral "Chih lung or dragon on both sides, also have mythological animal mask and mock ring handles on each shoulder from 1750 to 1860. The dragon is a sign used in place of our birth as a sign of the zodiac. (See the photograph by clicking the link at the end of this article).
There is a group of rather special, very finely worked overlapping cylinders known as the "Seal of the School ', as Always include a stamp with the design. We go back later and from the second half of the 19th century.
Although these were in the same way, the overlap is much more delicately carved, and often involve coating thickness is controlled to create shading. Is normally used opaque white bottles as fund, but some also worked in other colors are opaque. So far, I have never seen any in the snowflake or clear background. * The photograph shows a good seal cylinder representing the school a couple of cats to play with the insects hovering among the flowers. On each side there is a bowl of fruit on a table while the reverse is another scene of a drunken poet asleep in a garden. (See the picture by clicking on the link at the end of this article).
Layers of glass
Besides these types there is overlap are very interesting mottled, swirl of colors and designs as well as bottles of plain color, both carved and uncarved.
Many of these are very complex as There were some that were blown in molds finished by hand, others involved in a clear glass into a mold, but then another layer was blown inside the first bottle. This was a thin layer of a color, sandwiched by a third clear layer was also flown in. When you look down the neck of one of these bottles can be seen clearly these three levels.
A variety of colors can be successfully used, along with gold in the creation of snuff bottles. There is no doubt that their advanced knowledge in firing porcelain, metal oxides and how to react, it was a good use of glass.
It was suggested that, apart from the mixture of metals, including small particles of precious stones such as sapphires, emeralds and rubies were added to the molten glass.
Special attention was given to the feeling finishing material, which was hit by the kind of polish and even the weight is controlled by the addition of lead. Bottle with the interior can be controlled and it seems crazy as these names suggest - Cracked Ice, Fish Net or Sea Spray.
Most of the really fine snuff bottles were made in the imperial workshops and other small Glass works around Beijing.
Imitation stone
With this knowledge the Chinese were able to do amazing imitations of other materials. There is many bottles that look and feel like jade, aquamarine, agate and other stones. There was a light in the past that the Chinese did this as counterfeit, with intent deceive. I am sure this was not the case because it was too easy to find out by careful inspection. Under growing small holes in the surface that can not be polished and small bubbles were observed to demonstrate glass. Finally, unlike the stones of glass can be scratched fairly easily with steel.
The Chinese are making convincing imitations of minerals of great value as a demonstration of your ability. Another mineral intelligently Realgar was copied to your red Bright and yellow swirl color, impossible to use a high content of arsenic, so these copies have been caused a lot of intrigue.
Imperial Yellow
I have already mentioned that a wide range of colors is used for glass bottles. Such as sapphire blue and ruby red, seems to have been the most popular the first ones. However, the emperor Chien-lung was a favorite color that the decree could only be used by the imperial family and was a curtain opaque yellow becomes' Imperial Yellow '.
Not all bottles of this color are actually Imperial as after his death, this color was available to all. A true 'Imperial Yellow' bottle should be a period that can only be confirmed by the quality of the bottle and size. The `Imperial Yellow 'bottle in the photo is well carved with an archaic design on both sides and is the period from 1736 to 1795. (See the photograph by click the link at the bottom of this article).
Painted Inside
Remains an area of other bottles that really amazes everyone that is the "Inside painted 'bottles. I only have a couple of examples in the collection, as I do in general, not as a favor, in my opinion, they were never made for use. Snuff once you put them in the image does not show well, and quickly ruin the paint bucket.
I also have to explain that is not limited to paint the inside of glass, but have applied the same techniques to Crystal and chalcedony. The vast majority, however, are especially designed glass bottles in a uniform manner.
What is remarkable is that through this small hole in the neck that could be painted on the inside of landscapes, animals and even calligraphy portraits. To show the image through the glass painting to be done in reverse, all the details such as tabs, for example, had to be painted first! All these bottles are signed by the artist and many, some very attractive is also still being made today.
For our own collection I felt that it should having one or two examples and I was fortunate to buy the first known signed and dated within the bottle painted by Kan-Wen Huang. He is one of the first well-known artist and highly respected. He has painted the interior of a crystal bottle, a scene of Buddhist lions with a poem on the back. This bottle is signed and dated 1822. (See photograph by clicking the link at the bottom of this article).
Then bought another example of rock crystal, and these are the only two bottles in which we have painted. I think this is pretty remarkable, since the interior space is so limited, it is difficult to imagine how that beautiful painting was made in an area without completely ruining the other.
That originally would have been a bad, not double bottle. I do not know if the damage that has been withdrawn, was made before it was painted, but I think would have been. This was excavated in a very bad bottle of little value, before it was painted.
In my opinion, is the fact that hole was so bad that the paint even more amazing! Take a look at the picture. A scene of fish between aquatic plants, was painted in red, gold, pink, white, green and grisaille dated 1896 signed Chan Chu-Yuan. This glass has a defect in the natural stone that adds to the appeal under the water in this photo. (See the photograph by clicking the link at the bottom of this article).
Most glass bottles made in the way of painting is much larger than this glass. Some of the paintings reached, however, is hard to believe possible. There are even pictures that are so well done that only look as good as black and white photographs!
