Antique lamps - An 20th century Chinese Imari lamp
Author: Maurice Robertson
When speaking of Eastern porcelain usually associate the name "Imari" with Japan, but there is also a Chinese Imari. Production Japanese style of decoration began at Jingdezhen in the 18th century. Jingdezhen historically being the major center of production of porcelain china.
For over 2,000 years, Jingdezhen has been known as the Porcelain Capital of the World. Originally known as Xinpin, its name was changed when the Jingde emperor (1004-1007) the Southern Song Dynasty, ordered all the parts of the imperial court was marked in the period Jingde.
During the Ming and Qing dynasties long, porcelain production reached new levels of refinement and furnaces were created exclusively to meet the need of the imperial house. The imperial porcelain was so exquisite which was described as "white as jade, as bright as a mirror, as thin as paper, with a sound as clear as a bell." Today, Jingdezhen remains being the national center for the production of Chinese porcelain.
The Japanese, around 1700, were the first to produce the color of enamel that typify the Imari palette, underglaze blue, red and gold, green and sometimes glazes.
Dutch traders now had a monopoly on the insatiable demand of European porcelain. The first major orders with the Japanese in the kilns of Arita by the Dutch East Indies in 1656. In the trade reached its peak in late of the 17th century soon came to the attention of the great Chinese imperial kilns in Jingdezhen, Japanese Imari porcelain that was in high demand in Europe and rapidly Imari began to produce goods in competition with the Japanese.
The first Chinese Imari pieces were produced during the second half of the emperors Kangxi reign (1662-1722). Furnaces before the development of a Chinese version of the Japanese Imari style. With the creation of great Europeans, Chinese kilns slowly replaced the production Japanese in the 18th century, particularly in the social conditions in China was established, the production of porcelain for export have almost ceased to riot at the end of the Ming dynasty. Now, with the full establishment of the Qing dynasty, the reopening of the factories around 1700 Jingdezhen kilns with finally eclipsing the original Japanese exports.
Chinese Imari decoration may also include painting to the Famille Verte enamels some early armorial services produced for the English market decorated in this way. This first period of Japanese Imari porcelain china in general, are deemed to have been produced from circa1700 - around 1760.
The Chinese attitude to its great legacy of art and design differs significantly from Western thought, which tends to classify art in different historical periods that combines style, framed in time.
The Chinese, moreover, tend to overlap distinctive artistic styles without any real concept of a style began when, or if it had come to an end date! Chinese Imari, and certainly fits this category. Chinese Imari is still produced today Jingdezhen and examples are still decorated with symbols and devices, so old that few have the knowledge to interpret its meaning.
Lamp illustrates an example of that, the decor includes the old "eight trigrams" which dates from 2852 - 2737 BC
The eight trigrams are arranged groups of lines in rows that form the foundation of the Bagua, an ancient Chinese system of philosophy and divination. The symbols were and are used as ornamental ground for many items Chinese.
A large and impressive, the vintage, Chinese Imari, porcelain table lamp. The lamp of baluster form with a domed cover. The lamp is decorated in the traditional Imari palette of rich cobalt blue and iron red, dark color palette with touches of pale salmon enamel. In general, the decoration, golden brown. The domed cover, the shoulder and the base of the lamp is decorated in an alternating Ju'i lappet border, the decorative theme, rectangular bonsai pot. The lamp mounted on a gold, Chinese, bronze, quatrefoil base.
